Design Home Today is for people working on their own homes with a real budget. Every post answers a practical question: what a project costs all in, what order to do it in, what tends to go wrong, and when the honest answer is to hire someone.
Most home advice online falls into two camps. One shows you rooms styled by professionals on budgets you don’t have. The other sends you to a contractor before you’ve understood the job. This site sits in the gap, for the person who is planning the work, pricing it, and doing some or all of it themselves.
What you’ll find here
Posts built around numbers. How many lumens a living room needs. What a tub-to-shower conversion costs once the plumbing and tile are added. How high to hang art, to the inch. How deep the gravel base under a paver patio should be. Every price carries the month it was checked, because prices move, and a cost guide without a date is a guess.
The site covers six areas: interior design, home decor, furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, home improvement, and outdoor spaces.
What you won’t find here
Inspiration galleries, trend forecasts, or “shop the look” roundups of products nobody evaluated. You also won’t find electrical, gas or structural work presented as a weekend job. When a project needs a licensed professional, the post says so and explains why.
This site will tell you when an expensive option isn’t worth the money. It will also tell you when it is.
Who writes Design Home Today
I’m Josie Brennan. I’m not an interior designer or a contractor, and nothing here pretends otherwise. My job is the part most home advice skips: reading the manufacturer spec sheets, retailer prices and trade data, putting a date on every figure, and telling you plainly where the sources disagree.
[One or two true sentences about you: your own home, a project you’re planning, what made you start the site.]
When I haven’t used a product myself, the post says so.
How the numbers are checked
Every article ends with a section called “Every number, and where it came from.” It names the source behind each figure, flags where sources conflict, shows any calculation, and lists what the article chose not to claim. I use AI tools for research and drafting, and I check and edit everything before it publishes. The full process is in the Editorial Policy.
How the site is funded
Design Home Today is free to read. It earns money from display ads and from affiliate links to retailers: if you buy through one, the site may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions don’t decide what gets recommended. Details are on the Affiliate Disclosure page.
